It is expensive because it is very sophisticated and does an awful lot that the more basic imaging programs can't, but the chances are that the average user doesnt need the sophistication, needing only perhaps changing colour, contrast, resizing, removing red eye and the more obvious things that go wrong with a photo. Those can all be done in Photo editor or office Picture Manager, or Picasa2 which is free from Google. If you need cloning and layering etc then Paintshop Pro is under 100 or Adobe Photoshop.

It cost alot because of all the perfessional features they have added to it. I am in college for Graphic Design and ti is used there. Alos it is used by big companies who work in design. It is a great softwear to get great resuls from your work.
I use it often along with many other programs.

Photoshop is "expensive" because it is an application used by professionals in business who use it for profit.
You can get the edu version if your a student or get Photosho Elements which is cheaper than Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop is so expensive because of its options and resources. No, Paint cannot do nearly the amount of things that Photoshop can. Photoshop is widely used by some of the best photographers, graphic artists, imagers, and cartoonists world wide; its really a nifty tool.
